Learn to Avoid Foods That Trigger Lupus Flares - With an Easy, at Home Food Allergy Testing Strategy

!±8± Learn to Avoid Foods That Trigger Lupus Flares - With an Easy, at Home Food Allergy Testing Strategy

A food allergy is an immune response to a particular food or beverage, similar to the immune response against the body itself in a lupus patient. Don't confuse food allergies with food intolerances; they are different. When you experience food intolerance, it is not caused by the immune system, and is simply an adverse response by your body to a particular food (like lactose intolerance).

You've got to take care of yourself; having lupus or any auto-immune disease makes you especially susceptible to food allergies and these allergic reactions can instigate flares.

There are many ways to determine food allergies and the symptoms they produce. According to the Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network, you should watch for the following 7 symptoms up to two hours of eating.

Food allergy symptoms to watch out for:

o Tingling sensation in the mouth

o Swelling of the tongue and the throat

o Difficulty breathing

o Hives

o Vomiting, abdominal cramps, or diarrhea

o Sudden drop in blood pressure

o Loss of consciousness

If you suspect you have a food allergy, it is important to work with a health professional, because while simply cutting that food out of your diet may alleviate your symptoms, it won't address the potential allergy itself.

Allergy testing is easier than it sounds. You might be afraid of needles, but in most cases you don't even have to see them!

Common allergy testing methods:

Pin Prick allergy testing

In the pin prick skin test the doctor places a small drop of the substance (in this case food) that you may be allergic to on your skin and then pricks you with a tiny needle. He or she will then wait for a few minutes to see if you develop a reaction, which is usually localized in the form of redness and swelling.

RAST Allergy Test

The RAST test is another allergy test that requires a blood sample sent to a lab, where specialized tests are done to determine your allergies.

The At-Home Allergy Pulse Test

Another easy way to get an indication of a food allergy is by using the at-home allergy pulse test. This is done by checking your pulse rate before and after eating. When you maintain a close watch over your pulse rate while you challenge different foods, you can often determine possible food reactions. However, it is important that you do not use or rely on this test if you have a history of strong allergic reactions, especially anaphylaxis (a life-threatening allergic reason which results in swelling of the throat).

To perform the pulse test on yourself, simply take your pulse before eating a meal to establish your base (or control) pulse rate.

It's best to eat a single food, and then re-check your pulse rate at 15, 30 and 60 minutes afterwards. If you see an increase in elevation of more than 10 beats faster than your base pulse, it means you are likely allergic to that food.

An obvious problem is that you may want to eat more than one food at a time. Go ahead and eat that meal, and again do your pulse test before, and after your meal as above. In this way you'll be able to determine if the foods don't have any effect, or if there are foods creating a reaction with an elevated pulse rate.

To start testing your food reactions, a simple natural diet is the way to go. Stick with meals that don't require a lot of work and include just a few simple ingredients.

If you do find an increased pulse, it's a good idea to test each food separately in order to narrow down which food ingredient is the culprit from that meal.

Be sure to keep a diary with you at all times, so you can keep a proper record and learn to identify which foods, if any, are triggering a flare. Be cautioned though, food triggers and their reactions can change, therefore be tricky to catch. However, this test is a great start to taking control of unnecessary flares that result from food allergies.

It is best to work with an experienced wellness specialist to help you maintain your health program and get further support to answer your health questions when necessary.

90% of all food allergies are caused by only eight foods!

Yes, it's true. Only 8 common foods are the culprit for most food allergies. These are milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts (such as walnuts, cashews, and pistachios), fish, shellfish, soy, and wheat. You should also avoid spicy foods, processed foods (such as American cheese), alcohol, chocolate, and caffeine if you have Lupus. I know this sounds like no fun at all, but all of these have the potential to mess with your immune system and have unexpected effects on your body. That's the last thing you need to worry about with lupus!

One way to recall these foods is by remembering the term 'DONGS', which stands for:

Dairy: Cow's milk and related products, goats' milk and related products, eggs

Ocean: Fish, shellfish

Nuts: Peanuts, tree nuts

Grains: Soy, wheat, wheat, rye, oats, barley, anything referred to as "gluten"

Spices: Paprika, garlic, cinnamon, cloves, cola, liquorice, mustard, oregano, peppers, poppy seeds, and sage

Now that I've told you all the no-no's... we can go over some of the foods you can eat and enjoy without fear of stimulating your immune system. Foods like brown rice, sweet potatoes, and veggies can make up delicious dishes full of energy and carbs to keep you going through the day. For a refreshing drink, why not reach for some fresh fruits or veggies and make a nice juiced smoothie or drink that will support your immune system and energy as well (just avoid asparagus, eggplant, onion, zucchini, raw olives, and peppers).

It's important to keep your strength up so you can fight the lupus all day, not just after eating, so try and have several smaller meals throughout the day versus 2 or 3 heavy meals that will rob you of precious energy you don't have to waste.

Cashew and Black Bean Roll Up

I knew that I had better eat lunch as the afternoon was slipping by as I sorted clothes to pack for Washington DC. I get involved with projects and do not sit down to eat. Fear not, I have the perfect ingredients for a delightful vegetarian roll up. I used a half of a flat out tortilla, 2 ounces of black beans in sauce, 1/2 cup of raw cashews which I grinded in a coffee grinder and added an ounce of water, my produce was kale, cucumber, carrots, parsley, scallions and celery. I wanted crunch as well as a cool taste. Just as I was about to eat the roll up, I remembered that I had some avocado. I cut about an ounce to add to my vegetarian roll up. I regret that I did not get a picture of my grandson Anthony nor his friend Ryan enjoying their vegetarian roll ups. Anthony comes in hungry and asked about the quiche. He put some in his mouth and some on a plate for the microwave. It was going fast. Anthony called Ryan to come in and share the feast. He said to me, this is Ryan, and to Ryan this is Grandma! Ryan remembered that he had to bring his brother somewhere and went away for about a half hour while we prepared the food for both of them. He came back to eat the quiche which was his first taste of quiche. He liked it. Even when I said that it had spinach, cheddar cheese and basil in it. I asked whether he had an allergy to tree nuts as I did not want to give him the cashews if he did. Well, those boys managed to put away most of the remainder of the quiche. Why they left a ...

A Diwali Banquet

!±8± A Diwali Banquet

Apart from the sweets and savories which are eaten at Diwali, the main meals vary depending on the region of India.

Traditionally, different foods are eaten on the different days of the festival. On the first day, a sweet similar to fudge, made with semolina, cardamom, saffron, nuts and raisins, is eaten as well as a spicy bean curry. Some Hindus fast all day on the second day and at sunset eat a cracked wheat porridge sweetened with sugar. On the third day lentil fritters and Indian rice pudding might be eaten but on Diwali day itself and the following, New Years Day, huge banquets are prepared.

The women spend many days, prior to the festival itself, preparing food, usually in groups. Much of this time is spent making the snack and sweet foods of which the Indians are so fond but as the actual Diwali day approaches, attentions are turned to the major feast.

A Diwali feast would normally be vegetarian due to the vast number of non-meat eaters, both Hindu and non-Hindu throughout India. Typical dishes might be:

o Channa - chick peas and potatoes simmered in a sauce of sautéed onions, bay leaves, cinnamon, cardamom, peppercorns, cloves, garlic, fresh ginger, ground coriander and cumin, garam masala, cayenne, mace, nutmeg, turmeric and chopped tomatoes.
o Navratan Korma - a rich mild vegetable curry of paneer, carrots, beans, peas, cauliflower, raisins, cashews and tomatoes, flavoured with bay leaves and coriander.
o Khasta Aloo - cubed par-boiled potatoes fried with cumin seeds, ground coriander, turmeric, fresh green chillies and fresh ginger paste, garnished with lime juice and chopped fresh coriander.
o Malaiwale Subzi Kofta Curry - diced cabbage and spinach flavoured with ground cumin, turmeric, garam masala and salt, bound together with gram flour and fried. This is served with a rich spicy gravy of onions, tomatoes, chillies and thick cream.
o Nariyal Aur Badam Wale Chawal - Basmati rice and coconut pulp cooked in coconut milk, with the additional flavourings of two different pastes. The first is sliced almonds, green chillies, garlic, cinnamon stick, cloves and cardamoms, fried in ghee and ground to a pulp with the coconut. The second is mustard seeds, curry leaves and onions, fried in oil.
o Dal Maharani which combines three different sorts of pulses with onions, tomatoes, green chillies, ginger and flavourings.
o Sag Dal - yellow split peas mixed with spinach, fried onion, garlic, cumin seeds, turmeric, garam masala and fresh ginger, garnished with chopped coriander.
o Pooris - wheat flour bread rounds, deep fried until they puff up into a ball.
o Raita - plain yoghurt whisked until smooth and mixed with raw onion, cucumber, cumin and coriander powder and cayenne pepper.
o Various pickles and chutneys
o Kheer - a type of rice pudding made with milk as well as condensed milk and decorated with chopped nuts or mixed with orange zest and chopped orange.

Of course, these examples are not exhaustive. Any dishes not eaten as a normal every day meal would be considered special enough for Diwali.

Some History About the Raw Cashew Nut

!±8± Some History About the Raw Cashew Nut

This is a tropical production. The nut, which a good deal resembles the walnut, grows at the end of the fleshy, pea shaped receptacle called the apple. It has an agreeable sub-acid taste, and may be fermented into a kind of wine. The juice is also much used in the West Indies for making punch and other beverages.

The eatable kernel is contained within two shells, and between these shells there is a thick rust-colored liquor, extremely inflammable, and so caustic that it will blister the skin: this is used as an indelible marking ink for linen. The kernel is of a very fine flavor, preferable to the walnut, and employed in puddings and many other compositions of the cook, abounding in a delicious milky juice when fresh, and may be eaten raw, roasted, or pickled. Some also grind it with cacao in making chocolate, the flavor of which it is said to improve.

The broken nuts are used for steeping in old Madeira wines to improve their flavor. The acrid inflammable oil of the shell should be burned out before the nut is eaten; for, if incautiously cracked by the hands or teeth, the caustic oil will blister the lips and excoriate the skin where it touches. It is said that the milky juice of the tree itself, obtained by tapping or incision, forms a black marking ink for linen that cannot be washed out. The nuts are eaten abundantly by the people in Brazil.

The Cashew-nut, Anacarditim occidentale, though doubtless introduced from South America has established itself in many part? of the Peninsula especially along the sea coasts where sandy. It is a low much branched straggling tree with rather large leave and pink flowers. The fruit has a pear-shaped swollen red peduncle on the top of which is the kidney-shaped fruit. The peduncle is very juicy and somewhat sweet, with an astringent after taste. It is rather a poor fruit on the whole, and the best way of using it is to squeeze the peduncle into a glass, and add some sugar so as to make a drink of it. The nut can be eaten raw or parched, requiring, however, the black skin of the kernel to be first removed. The fruit in the Straits is usually very small, and very inferior to the Cashew of South America.

The accepted hand-processing used to uncover the right flavor of these raw, organic cashews is a labor of like that has almost vanished around the globe. Traditional producers on average can only prepare 2 kilos (4.4 pounds) of raw kernels on a daily basis. But the flavor variation between raw and traditionally processed cashews is clearly identifiable.
